BIOGRAPHY

Once married to a classical pianist turned big band and club musician, Joan Finton began long ago making drawings in clubs and concert halls.  She fondly calls it "drawing in the dark". Her drawings include portraits of such famous jazz musicians as Oscar Peterson and Toots Thielemans. These drawings have emerged as one-of-a kind monotypes and as intaglio prints made with a non-toxic process developed by artist, Dan Weldon. These "solar etchings" utilize a light sensitive plate and achieve their "etch" by means of running water, thus avoiding the traditional use of acids.

Ms Finton was born in Buffalo, NY, received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Syracuse University, and taught art in NYC high schools for many years.  She currently teaches art classes for adults in her home studio in Berkeley, California and in facilities for older and disabled adults.  As a printmaker, she is a member of a collaborative workshop, The Blue Bay Press, and is a board member of The California Society of Printmakers.
